Young Love

My mom's sibs and their families would usually go to our place in Bulacan every November 1. It somehow became a tradition to gather at our house for lunch after we visit the graves of the dearly departed.

My first two sentences seem to have no connection at all with my title, huh!

Anyway, during the same visit of my relatives, Daddy M (Mom's bro-in-law) was looking smug. Later, I found out why. A few days ago, my cousin Ayen, introduced a boyfriend. She is seventeen. I didn't know how to react (Backgrounder: Ayen is the only girl in her family, she's the third girl among cousins after me and the next girl cousin is only ten years old). She is after all still considered a baby.

Kaya, sa kakasintemyento ni Daddy M, naglasing siya nung araw na iyon. Hehe. They asked me to talked to Ayen. But I was speechless. I wanted to tell her to focus on her studies first, but I could not. I was once a rebel, myself.

Which brought back in mind the conversation I had with my brother Yang, a few weeks ago:

Him: Ilang taon ka nga ulet nagkaboyfriend?
Me: Sixteen (Yang was only 13 then)
Him: Ahehe, kaya pala galit na galit si Daddy nun, kebabata nyo pa nagboboyfriend na kayo!

I was still young, indeed. And I remember Dad turning to alcohol then. I am not sorry I had a relationship at an early age. But I am sorry that I caused my parents to worry about me. In 1994, I wanted to know why Dad and Mom fussed too much about my relationship. Now that I'm already an adult, I look at Ayen and I understand.

Oh I can't wait to be a Nanay to a teenage girl. Not. :)
